THE UNIVERSE OF VIOLET

Dear Harper

INT. BEVERLY HILLS HOUSE - NIGHT

VIOLET (17) enters the front door to loud music blasting, crowds of college students. She wears cutout shorts and a holographic top.

TITLE CARD: SEPTEMBER

VIOLET looks around in awe, the crowd of people, the flashing lights. There’s even a spiral staircase.

The music continues...VIOLET finds the open-space kitchen and the counter with various bottles and cups. She squeezes through some people to sort through the mess. There’s a couple in the corner making out. She ignores it. Most bottles are empty. She frowns.

She eyes her roommate, EVIE, across the room, too busy chatting to see Violet. Violet bumps into someone.

VIOLET

Sorry—

HARPER

Yo. Violet?

His face is glistening and he looks so lean wearing this baggy shirt. Partygoers pass behind him, moving him closer to Violet.

VIOLET

Hey.

HARPER

It’s so nice to see you!

How’s the move-in?

VIOLET

It went smoothly. Your’s?

HARPER

All good. My roommate is

around somewhere.

VIOLET

Yeah, mine too.

There’s a moment of just looking at each other. Their first encounter away from home. Their first college party.

HARPER

Pool?

EXT. POOL - MOMENTS LATER

They sit together at the edge of the pool, the sky fading into a pink and orange sunset. [COLD WAR by CAUTIOUS CLAY] plays from inside the house.

HARPER holds out his cup.

HARPER

Cheers to Los Angeles.

Violet holds her cup out.

VIOLET

Cheers to no longer being

in high school.

He turns to Violet.

HARPER

It wasn’t all bad.

VIOLET

It’s all a blur.

HARPER

A blur with some good

memories tucked inside.

VIOLET

Mm. Like what?

HARPER

The yearbook interview.

VIOLET

Sophomore year?

He’s thinking and smiles to himself.

VIOLET

What?

HARPER

No, you were just so

excited to ask me a

speed round of questions.

VIOLET

I had important duties

as an editor.

HARPER

As president, too.

Violet shakes her head, like brushing off difficult memories.

HARPER

There was always so much

talk about you. Around you.

Violet’s brows furrows as she watches him.

VIOLET

Bad things, maybe.

Harper shakes his head.

HARPER

No, I only thought good

things... You know that.

VIOLET

You might’ve been the only one.

Violet takes a sip of her drink, looking out into the sunset. Harper watches her before looking out towards the view. And like the universe timed it, someone cannon-balled into the pool, splashing Violet.

INT. DORM ROOM - EVENING

Violet sits at her desk, fixing her hair. Evie’s sitting on the side of her bed opposite of Violet’s.

TITLE CARD: OCTOBER

Violet gets a text from Harper: Meet you at the theater.

EVIE

Oh, no. Today’s the 12th.

VIOLET

Yeah. Premiere day. Why?

Evie’s mouth turns into a frown.

EVIE

“Buzzcut” and I were going

to a show.

VIOLET

I really don’t get to know

his name?

EVIE

I’m sorry...I can meet your

friend another time?

She pulls off the apology with a wide grin and puppy eyes. Violet nods.

VIOLET

Yeah, don’t worry.

Violet sighs.

EXT. REGENCY THEATER - NIGHT

Violet rounds the corner to the theater, spotting Harper outside looking at his phone. He peers up.

HARPER

Hey!

VIOLET

You’re alone?

HARPER

He canceled. What about...?

VIOLET

Same. We can go somewhere...

HARPER

What? I still wanna see the

movie. Unless, you don’t...

VIOLET

No! I mean, yeah, I wanna

see it. I’ve been dying to.

HARPER

Okay.

He says it with a smile, motioning for Violet to walk in front of him.

INT. REGENCY THEATER - NIGHT

They pass a movie poster titled “Memory I Love”

THEATER SEATS

Violet and Harper sit side by side, Harper holding the popcorn container between them. The reflection of the projector screen glows on their faces.

SEBASTIAN (OS)

I think you’re full of light,

Marie. When you walk into a

room, everyone wants to be

around you.

MOVIE SCREEN

Two characters have reached their confession scene, played out in a small bedroom.

SEBASTIAN (CONT)

People want to drown in your

attention. They see so much

good in you that they can’t

bare to see you gone. That’s

you, Marie.

THEATER SEATS

Violet corrects her posture, her elbow brushing Harper’s. We watch their reactions to the scene playing out, attentive and tender.

MARIE (OS)

Sebastian, this is...what if

we’re wrong?

SEBASTIAN (OS)

I’ll keep trying until you

know it’s second nature for

me to love you. Promise me,

you’ll try to see it in

yourself. Have faith in me.

MOVIE SCREEN

Both characters have moved closer together, his hand caressing her face.

SEBASTIAN

You’re my happiest place, Marie.

[3 NIGHTS by DOMINIC FIKE] plays.

I/E HARPER’S CAR - DAY

Harper’s driving while Violet sits in the backseat with Evie and Lily. Grayson’s in the passenger seat. All five are singing along to the radio music.

TITLE CARD: NOVEMBER

VIOLET (VO)

What do you think of these?

INT CONVENIENCE STORE - DAY

Violet holds a can labeled “Strawberita.” Lily peers over with a nod.

LILY

Those are good. Trust.

VIOLET smiles.

EXT. POOL - NIGHT

Violet and all of their friends sit and drink in the jacuzzi. Violet takes a sip of the Strawberita. She nods to Lily in approval. They hold their drinks up.

Montage begins:

Laughing, talking in the jacuzzi.

Jumping into the pool and swimming around. More friends have joined.

Sitting in a circle in the living room, playing a card game.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

An empty bottle on the floor spins around, the end pointing to Violet. She looks up to the guy sitting in front of her. They lean into a kiss, everyone’s giggling. They pull apart, revealing Harper’s reaction: annoyed yet dismissive.

HARPER

I forgot something in my car.

He stands and shuffles out of the room. Violet watches him leave.

EXT. PALM SPRINGS HOUSE - NIGHT

Harper leans against the side of his car, brows furrowed, jaw tense. He inhales deeply. The door closes behind him and he swings around. It’s Violet. It takes a moment before either one says anything.

VIOLET

Harper...

By the worry in his eyes, Violet knows where this conversation is going.

HARPER

This is...impossible.

VIOLET

What?

HARPER

With you. Waiting for a miracle.

VIOLET

Why do you need a miracle?

HARPER

A miracle to make sure we’re

on the same page.

VIOLET

But we usually are.

HARPER

Same page, but also same

feelings.

VIOLET

Okay, wait...

HARPER

Cause I won’t make it if you

break my heart.

Violet steps back, reevaluating.

VIOLET

Break your heart?

Harper searches her eyes.

VIOLET (CONT)

This is all I want. Here

with you.

He exhales, like he’d been holding his breath. He steps towards Violet.

HARPER

I’ve been so caught up in

my head. Worried that maybe

I’d never have a chance to

tell you.

VIOLET

I think we’ve seen too many

movies to not get to this point.

HARPER

We were bound for a confession.

VIOLET

A confession?

A smiles grows on their faces.

HARPER

So, Violet, I confess to you.

Confessing that I’ve always

had love for you.

VIOLET

There’s the miracle.

Violet steps forward, swinging her arms around him, pulling him close.

VIOLET

Oh, Harper. You have no

idea how long I’ve been

waiting to tell you the same.

Violet pulls back, her face in front of his.

VIOLET

I can’t believe...this.

HARPER

Me neither. Was I obvious?

VIOLET

I don’t know, I thought I was.

Violet chuckles.

HARPER

Over and over, I was trying

to just get the courage to

say it.

VIOLET

So me playing spin the bottle

was your final straw?

His head falls back as he lets out a scoff.

VIOLET (CONT)

I guess we would still talk

about us even if I had kissed

you there.

HARPER

I wouldn’t have been able

to do it without completely

turning red.

VIOLET

Good to know. I was going to,

but then everyone will know.

This conversation unlocks the confidence between the both of them.

HARPER

Well, if you were thinking

about it...

His head does the same motion when he laughed, but now he’s smiling with a glint in his eye. Violet couldn’t help but smile and compress it out of shyness.

VIOLET

You’re making it seem like

I’m always thinking about it.

HARPER

I know I am.

He says it so confidently even in a soft voice. His hand holds the side of Violet’s face.

VIOLET

Harper...

HARPER

Can I...?

Violet nods, smiling into the kiss.

MATCH CUT:

EXT. HARPER’S HOUSE - MIDNIGHT

[NEW YEAR’S DAY by TAYLOR SWIFT] plays. Fireworks glitter the sky in the background. Harper and Violet have their New Year’s Kiss.

Title Card: NEW YEAR’S

They break from the kiss, laughing at the amount of confetti in the air. Harper slings his arm around Violet.

INT. HARPER’S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS

They both reenter the house to the living room, everyone else still in the backyard. There’s confetti and decorations with ‘2019’.

VIOLET

You’re better at throwing

parties.

He chuckles and shakes his head.

HARPER

I’m not drawing in

“Violet-type” crowds though.

VIOLET

Your decorations are prettier.

And I will help you clean this up.

Harper fills two cups with water, handing one to Violet.

HARPER

We didn’t talk about

resolutions, did we?

VIOLET

I passed the first semester.

Harper rolls his eyes and smiles, Violet falls towards him laughing.

HARPER

You know what...

VIOLET

I’m kidding.

They take a moment as the tone shifts.

VIOLET (CONT)

I’m serious though that us...

that’s quite the milestone.

HARPER

You’re my resolution.

VIOLET

You’re happy?

HARPER

Always. And you?

VIOLET

Harper, every desirable path

always ends with you.

HARPER

And Violet, you are my

happiest ending.

Their fingers intertwining. [NEW YEAR’S DAY continues] They look at each other with lights in their eyes.
